Primarius Blog - Juggling glass balls

A couple of years ago, Bryan Dyson the CEO of Coca-Cola made some important observations about life and the juggling act it involves.  He talked about how juggling the rubber balls (the things that aren't important) and glass balls (the things that are important) of life - read his great story here.

We know there is going to be big mental health fall out thanks to Covid-19, but maintaining physical health is important too. I remember over 20-years ago working for a boss that frowned on sick days (and begrudged everyone their annual leave!) and the impact it had on my health. I ended up with bronchitis and the conversation with the doctor went something like this:

Doctor: "You need to take 3 days off work and rest totally before you get sicker."

Me: "NO! I cannot afford to take time off"

Doctor: "That's fine then go back to work, and I'll see you next week again and you will need to take 3 weeks off"

You are right in guessing I took the 3 days off as advised.  I worked at that firm for 3 years and I had bronchitis every winter whilst I was there, and yet I have not had it since. That experience taught me 3 important lessons:

  1. People do get sick at inconvenient times - there is never a "good time" to take time off and as business owners and bosses we need to understand that.
  2. Sick people make other people sick by spreading their germs, so better for people to rest up at home and stop sharing the germs.  Covid-19 has really driven this point home!
  3. If you are sick you need to rest without feeling guilty.  The more good value rest you get, the quicker you get better and the less time off work you need.
