Do your people and culture support your purpose? Your work environment is a community, and the tone is set not only by you but by your team.  So, if you do not do this intentionally you will end up with the culture and environment that everyone else creates by default.

I recently went into a shop late one afternoon and my discussion with the retail assistant went like this:

Shop assistant: "Hello, how are you today?"

Me: "Hi, I am good, how are you going today?"

Shop assistant: "I am having a really good day; I have not had a single customer in the shop today!"

Me: "OK, I shall just improve your day further and leave now goodbye."

Imagine being the owner of the business and having your customers treated like that!  I just wonder about 2 things:

  1. How the shop assistant thought/imagined her salary wage being funded? and
  2. What guidance and/or supervision the business owner is or has provided about the culture to the people that work there?
