Splitting super with your spouse can be a great way to manage your super balances. Each year you are able to split up to 85% of your super contributions with your spouse.

Here are some ways it can be useful:

  1. Topping up low super balances: if one spouse has a much higher balance than the other, then you may choose to split super contributions from a spouse making regular contributions.
  2. Consolidating super: in cases where one spouse has no super, it may be worth directing the contributions to the other spouse making it easy to manage a single superannuation account.
  3. Parental leave: the super account of the partner on parental leave could continue to grow due to the working partner splitting some or all of their superannuation contributions to that spouse.
