The main tax identifier numbers in Australia are:

  1. Tax File Number (TFN): every taxpayer in Australia has a TFN, this includes both individuals and various entity types, including companies, trusts, and superannuation funds. Transactions relating to a TFN profile are recorded on an income tax account (ITA). The TFN is a private number, which means:
    • - You should not provide it to anyone other than your accountant or the Australian Taxation Office (ATO).
    • - It is used in reference to all income tax obligations; and
    • - It should never be sent by email, so if you ask us to send you your TFN then we shall send it by SMS to your mobile phone.
  2. Australian Business Number (ABN): an ABN on the other hand is a public number and all transactions are recorded on an integrated client account (ICA).  An ABN is commonly used for the following functions:
    • - Goods and Services Tax (GST);
    • - Pay-as-you-go-withholding (PAYGW) tax deducted from salaries and wages; and
    • - Pay-As-You-Go Instalment (PAYGI) payments and tracking.

ABN numbers may be searched on the ATO's ABN lookup website.
